Alternative Project

Alternative project for the

      ‘Zone Des Bassins’ Cherbourg

- Hide the reconstructed hypermarche Carrefour between two new rows of reproduction 18th century harbourside houses with shops, cafes, restaurants and boutiques on the ground floor, and apartments above, in a style compatible with Quai Alexandre opposite. Parking for shoppers, apartment owners and tourists would be above the hypermarche, between the two rows of buildings.

- The ground floor shops and boutiques would not only open out onto the promenade, but also the interior of the hypermarche mall.

- Move the fisherman’s warehousing at the far end of the basin, to the Napoleonic harbour ‘la rade’, and replace with an attractive casino building, and a stage on the promenade – a spectacular venue.

- Create a lively promenade around the Bassin, with palm trees and attractive street lamps in the style of the old charm of a French port – the likes of which has universal appeal – eg. Honfleur.

- Make provision for tall ships, with a noteable attraction like for example a reconstruction of the ‘Soleil Royal’ Flagship, in the bassin area, with pontoons for luxury yachts.

- There is space for a ‘trophy building’,(such as the ‘gherkin’ in London,’spinnaker’ Portsmouth, Eiffel tower and Sydney opera house) in the area in front of the reconstructed hypermarche – an outstanding opportunity for Cherbourg to attract international investment and prestige.
